Man dies after boat capsizes in Bourne

BUZZARDS BAY — An 82-year-old man died yesterday after the 20-foot motorboat he
and his son were in capsized near Hog Island, the Coast Guard said.
...
The man was not wearing a life jacket, according to a Bourne fire official.

The water temperature at the time of the incident was 50 degrees with 4- to 6-foot
seas, the Coast Guard said.


Poor guy was probably out fishing - did a search on this website and I guess there are some nice rips out there for fishing. I feel for his family.

The article sort of leads you to one conclusion (boaters fault) but not all the information is provided. I try not to make any hard conclusions from anything from the media.

This will be my 1st year on the water - I was busy on Saturday taking my safety class. 7000 US boating deaths a year.

From the experts on this site - any reason to be fishing in this kind of condition?

That is vaery sad news.

I went out the other side of the Canal Sunday, and while the weather got kida bad, I can see being on the Buzzards Bay side being a lot worse. The weather came from the SW.

This is a case for visiting the conditions. Any time
the coastguard offers up a small boat advisory is
reason head the warning.

Maybe fish from the marina instead.

Just to answer the question on what would you do in these conditions my opinion is...

I have a 21' boat and 4-6' seas = STAY HOME!
If I got caught out that it is a different story but if the seas are 4-6' the life vests go on.

Sad story. you can definently fish in those types of swells but it's a pain in the ass. In my opinion there is nothing beneficial to fishing in that type of weather. If anything, it is counter productive simply because your bouncin up and down so much, and you have to put more focus on driving the boat then on fishing. (Safety is always number 1 but when it gets to the point that you have to work your ass off just to get to a fishing spot then maybe you should call it a day). If your in that type of weather and your on my boat then your throwin on a PFD-i dont care what you say. One more thing for those who might not know.....when your hittin waves like that hit 'em at 45 degree angles.
