I am a student at the University of Rhode Island. My restoration ecology class lead by Dr. Laura Meyerson have joined the Taylor Point Restoration Association with the goal of “creating and maintaining a Taylor Point Natural Area that prioritizes habitat protection and improvement while accommodating public access to the shore.”
For the past three months we have been surveying wildlife, invasive plant species, researching new footpath systems, and more. Our goal is to create a proposal for Taylor Point’s restoration so the Taylor Point Restoration Association can begin their dream of restoring this hidden treasure.
In its heyday Taylor Point, a small patch of land under the Claiborne Pell Bridge owned by the town of Jamestown, was a beautiful beach, forest and a hot spot for families to fish, swim, and hike. As you enter Taylor Point today, you are confronted with a wastewater treatment plant, a highway barn, overgrown vegetation, and yet a stunning view. Its sandy beach 20 feet from Route 138 is covered with seaweed and has chunks of dark soil eroding from the side of the road as a massive stand of the highly invasive Phragmites looms behind it. The black cherry forest is creeping with invasive species, such as oriental bittersweet and black locust. Fences are decorated with graffiti and litter is settled on the ground surrounding trash bins. Footpaths are eroding and covered with poison ivy, daring brave individuals to venture down to the beautiful slate cliffs offering a million dollar view of the Claiborne Pell Bridge.
With our help, the Taylor Point Restoration Association can turn Taylor Point back into the beautiful ecosystem it once was. Swimmers and fishermen will return to a clean beach void of erosion while hikers will see a thriving forest full of native species supporting our local wildlife.
One of our main goals is to make this spot as accessible and accommodating as possible to the public. To do this we created a survey to get the public opinions. We would love to get the opinion of the fishermen using this locations so we can restore it with the proper accommodations. Please take the survey and leave any suggestions, comments, or concerns! https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/CHBZSBL
