Paint for Bucktail Heads?
This may be in the wrong forum, but couldn't find the answer using the search mode. I have some bucktails that the paint has been sanded off parts of the head from bumping across the sandy bottom of the surf.
What kind of paint do you use to repaint/touch them up? Where do you get it?

Most bucktail jig heads are powder coated.

I've touched them up with a bit of craft paint and a clear coat of fly tying head cement. Worked OK, but not as durable as powder paint.

Heat the head, dip in the powder paint, then heat the head again to cure the paint. See the link I posted above for detailed instructions.

i just started doing some jigs, powder paint seems the way to go, try and keep eye clear, the stuff is strong, after you cure it i think it may need to be drilled out!!!! i read someplace to hold by the eye when dipping to help prevent buildup in the hole...

Powder painting is THE way to go... I heat mine in a toaster oven, then dip into containers with powder paint.. be sure to stir the powder often, because it tends to pack down, after a few dozen jigs, it may be necessary to sift hardened bits of powder paint out of the mixture.... for extra durability, you can brush Devcon 1 hour epoxy onto the jig jead ... be sure to flip it end over end until the epoxy sets up... use the 1 hour, not the 5 minute, as the 5 minute yellows much faster...

Thanks jlnel and Roc! I think I'll replace some of my dingier bucktails with new, and then experiment with the powdercoat this winter on the old ones.

Roccus is right on Excpt you heat in oven after painting at 220 degrees to really harden..Then the epoxy which also makes the jig paint worm pruff as we west coasters always use worm tails..Without the epoxy the worm melts the paint...real messy.. then drill out eyes if they're filled with paint...Jim
