A 221/4-pound striped bass at Lake Hickory by Tim Walker. The fish hit a live shad.

Striped bass fishing at Lake Hickory presently appears to be providing the best freshwater action in the Carolinas.

Limit catches of large stripers, ranging up to 26 pounds, are reported this week from the Catawba River reservoir by Raymond Sanders of 321 Marina.

"The 26-pounder, a beautiful striper, was caught by Scott Benfield of Statesville," said Sanders. "The most successful fishermen are using live bait, either shad or shiners. And they're fishing from around dawn until about 11 a.m."
