Fisheries Address Drop In Striper Catch

The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s (ASMFC) Striped Bass Management Board has initiated development of a draft addendum aimed at reducing the mortality of striped bass coastwide by up to 40% and further protecting the species’ spawning stock when it is concentrated and vulnerable. According to an ASMFC press release, development of the addendum was initiated to allow managers to promptly respond to the results of the next stock assessment, if the assessment warranted immediate action.

This is a step in the right direction. What they are essentially doing is providing the mangement board the ability to impose immediate action based on the stock assessment due in 2012. I think they may be anticipating a poor stock assessment? Not sure. We as fishermen will need to read the proposed addendum and submit commentary based on the action plan hopefully supporting the measures as detailed. It will be interesting to see how they are proposing to implement the conservation measures and which sectors will be asked to reduce their take? I believe it should be uni lateral reduction in take. But I don't know. The meeting minutes should be available tommorow.
