I don't mind paying a small fee if the money goes to fisheries management. I'd rather have one cost for a national license. That makes more sense since the fish migrate across states.

I voted that I am for it but I doubt it will make much of a difference. I think the best thing would be to have DEM around alot more. I am sort of just starting out with salt water fishing but have been fishing for bass for a while and it is amazing what some people will keep and how many of them they will keep. I think the license along with DEM being more active is the way to go so maybe people will learn that there are size and bag limits for a reason. This is just my .02

Just took effect Jan. 1st in N. Carolina. 15 bucks-on top of your freshwater lic. and it is required to fish in the sounds and lower halfs of the rivers (brackish water). In the rivers you need a coastal lic on one side of the sign and an inland lic. on the other.
In answer to an earlier ? in the thread- marine stripers are not stocked in NC. And there is at least one landlocked lake that has reproducing stripers-Kerr Lake in NC. When they dammed the river to form Kerr Lake (back in the 50s) there were still some spawning stripers there which were trapped in the lake. To the great surprise of biologists that population of stripers has prospered.

We have visited this one before Joe. You can believe it gets nasty.
Most of the railing both pro and con was moved to the reference library or the fishing politics forum This thread will likely be combined with another just for archive purposes.

edit* On second thought. I'll lead this thread to the most updated info. Its best Best not to dredge up the older issues again.

Why its inevitable thread

There are plenty of states that have a saltwater license and I don't see it helping them any. Ca and TX just to name a few. Ca residents have a license that's like $30 or so and they have fishing areas taken away from them yearly with MPA's, Marine Protected Areas. And in TX they're being cutback on red snapper. In FL they're going to close the gulf grouper fishery for a few months and they too are facing a growing number of MPA's.

There is little doubt though that each state will issue the license to keep the money local. There's a mad dash going on right now throughout the northeast for all states to get it done. NJ or NY should fall next.

From what I've heard, Feds gave the states until 2009 to get it done, or they will issue a Fed license.
Now, what does that do to state license.? Gonna need both because some states don't comply?
It's all just a "ball o' snot" IMO.

I hope they combine the fresh and salt if its inevitable but somehow i doubt it.
Wouldnt that satisfy the requirement for the mandated database? Thats too easy.

think i read that in ct next year (2009) the price of the resident license will rise from it's present 20 bucks to 25 to cover the saltwater. at this point i like theway the ct dep manages the inshore (freshwater) fishery hopefully they will have a say in how the saltwater is managed and have the extra dough to staff.

license money and permit fees in ct do not go into the general fund they go back to the dep so our gov won't be buying any male escorts.(the head of the dep will) if she was so inclined i'm sure it would cost more than four grand.

I can't answer yes or no without knowing where the funds would go.
