Default Jamaica Bay - Back Bay

Captain Vinnie / Karen Ann Charters

Spotlight Jamaica Bay

Back Bay
Back a few decades ago the power plant located off of Mott and Dunebar in Rockaway was periodically active. Thatís when it was called Lilco and it would discharge some warm water similar to Northport. Straight across was Inwood park and around the bend Inwood Marina. The marsh banks were rich with mussels and clams and anyone expecting to catch some flatties would do the ritual of gathering and then shucking mussels. This protective cove was a great early spring spot for shore anglers and boaters alike. The dark mud bottom warmed early and situated throughout the cove were clumps of random grasses sprouting up here and there. I learned the spot from my good friend Kenny now an accomplished captain the skipper of the MY Joyce. Kennyís dad Ronnie new the places like the back of his hand and we would fish with him and as the saying goes catch a few. Thirty five plus years later we still hit the spot, nothing like experience. The cove itself bears a resemblance to freshwater spots a quiet protected area, out of the wind with shore points and structure submerged and revealed. Climb into your waders and you can walk and cast covering ground in every direction. Small bucktails ľ to Ĺ ounce are ideal they slide above the bottom without collecting too much weed. We preferred the upperman style flat head not digging in too deep, just puffing up from the bottom. As bait appeared small pencils produced and it would be wise to have a bunker snag in your bag just in case. As you make your way along the western shore the bay funnels toward a narrow channel another fishy place. I like to think of it as one of those spots when you want to fish away from the crowds.
Water temperatures on the surface remained a constant forty-four degrees that said we didnít anticipate too much. But as the saying goes the law of averages always catches up with you we managed to bend the rods and catch and release our first bass of the pre season. No jumbo by any stretch of the imagination a borderline keeper at best but hey it had stripes and put a smile on our faces.
The water had a more reasonable spring like color today, as the winds seem to be settling down a bit. A few boats apparently trying for flounder could be seen maybe one or two others zipping around the marshes hoping to see some signs of life but not much. A few birds circling the usual spots and that was it.
