Pond Wipers

I have 1 1/2 acre pond that I stocked with wipers last year to help control my bluegill population. They have done quite well. Now I need to learn how to get them out of the pond. I can't seem to get them to hit any lures I throw in the pond. I've tried jigging with a 4" Swimmin' Pogy from Power Bait, Twin Tail Grubs (orange, white, and chartruse), and some spoons. So far I've had no luck with catching them. I know they are still alive because I've seen them up near shore cruising the weedline in small schools (10-15 fish). I stocked 65, thats what the fishery told me to do it was a few to many from what I've found out since then. I was thinking about trying some live shinners or night crawlers near the bottom basically like you'd fish for catfish. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I would live line a Sunfish. Shiner may work too.

Well I tried Live bait this evening. I had my father, my wife, and I fishing. We tried Shinners about 4" long on the bottom and under a bobber at about 2 feet above the bottom, chicken liver on the bottom, and night crawlers on the bottom. Didn't even get a bite from it. I however did manage to hook into one using an artifical bait. Its this green chartruse fish I'm having to reel it as fast as I can to produce any strikes. It makes me wonder though if a spinner bait would work. A bright green spinner bait with silver blades maybe? I never figured catching these things would be as difficult as they are proving to be. The weather also maybe playing a role. I live in Indiana and we were under a flood warning on friday so the water is slightly high and very muddy. Which means there was a nice influx of food into the water as well.

I'm in Cincinnati, and specialize in taking care of pesky wipers. ;)
As for crankbait getting hit, go to www.smacktackle.com, check out the Gizz4 lures, there's one that will come close to your green chartruese color scheme, and will imitate the sunfish you've been feeding these with.
Sounds like we need that Citrus Shad color NOW!

I'm just outside Indianapolis. I'm gonna head over to Gander Mountain today to look at some crankbaits. I'm not a bass fisherman by any means but I've never had a fish hit a artificial so hard and so fast. I'm having to reel as fast as possible to get a strike out of these things. When they hit they hit like you hooked into a mack truck though. I'm just not getting a hook up. This is what I'm using.

Seems to be working minus no hook ups. And I don't think the large mouth that are in the pond (like 10) are going to be hitting a lure moving that fast.

Storm swim shad, great jigging swimming lure.
Try rooster tails, white, chartruese, even fire tiger.
Or, surface popper plug, chug it along.
Sounds like they're hungry, and agressive!

Hey, I don't mean to mock you, you did take the hook guard off that jig? :)
You say you're getting hits, but no hook ups, that plastic tube comes off the hook, it's there to protect YOU from hook up.

LOL. Yeah I took the hook guard off. I've got a few other colors to try. I was trying to use a twin tail grub with a jig last night but that got me not even a bite.

You might also try a small Kastmaster in gold this time of the year. On Lake Monroe they have success with chicken livers for wipers. Rig them like you're bottom fishing catfish. Good Luck!

We've done the chicken livers two nights in a row now all we've caught are a few catfish. I'm starting to think they still have plenty of food. It doesn't help that the crawfish all decided to come out of their burrows in the past two days.

Have you tried any rattlin' baits? Like a rattle trap or rattlin' rapala. I've had success with both of those baits. Try matching color and size to what they are eating. Just a suggestion.

The kid kept falling off the hook Jeff. So I had to switch baits
