Northwest ? ESA Listing Not Proposed for Cherry Point Herring
NOAA Fisheries Service has completed an updated Endangered Species Act (ESA) status review of Pacific herring, inclusive of the Cherry Point herring stock (Strait of Georgia, Washington). This status review update was initiated in response to a petition received on May 14, 2004, to list the Cherry Point stock of Pacific herring as a threatened or endangered species.
NOAA Fisheries Service has determined that the Cherry Point herring stock does not qualify as a "species" for consideration under the ESA. The Cherry Point stock is part of the previously defined Georgia Basin distinct population segment (DPS) composed of inshore Pacific herring stocks from Puget Sound (Washington) and the Strait of Georgia (Washington and British Columbia). The Georgia Basin DPS of Pacific herring is not in danger of extinction or likely to become endangered in the foreseeable future throughout all or a significant portion of its range, and therefore does not warrant ESA listing at this time.
The status review update for Pacific herring and the list of references for this decision are available online.
