Winter baseball Hot Stove

Bob Klapish of the NY Post reports that the Mets will continue to make a strong bid for the Red Sox to trade Manny Ramirez.
The Sox are interested in Carlos Beltran as a replacement centerfielder for the impending departure of Jonny Damon to the Yankees who is reportedly seeking a Scott Boras brokered 5 year deal.
"We know what Manny and David can do, but I make them look good. And they make me look good".
The Sox would be looking hard at Lance Berkman as a replacement for Manny in left field.
Interest has also lessened for the free agent services of Brad Lidge due to his Braden Looper like outings in the Fall classic.

The top 25 free Agents for 2006
Position Players
1. Lance Berkman
With a career on-base percentage of .416, he's been an offensive machine the last four years in Houston. Averaging 32 home runs and 113 RBIs since 2001, Berkman is a better offensive version of Magglio Ordo?ez. Considering that Berkman signed a one-year $10.5-million deal to avoid arbitration, he should land a comparable contract with another solid season in 2005.
Hideki Matsui (松井 秀喜 Matsui Hideki
Godzilla stays put.
Carlos Lee
Quitely putting up numbers
Johnny Damon
Damon had stated publicly last year that he wants to finish up his career in Boston. At the same time, the Yankees will be looking for a center fielder younger than Bernie Williams
Paul Kanerko
After resurection year with the White Sox. He probably stays put.
Bret Boone
Will the real Bret Boone please stand up? now that his name has been publicly associated with steroids
Erubiel Durazo
Samy Sosa
Almost no interest at all.
Moises Alou
Ramon Henandez
Decent backstop with power when healthy.
Benjie Molina
Exceptional defensive catcher. Mets most interested.
Randy Winn
Lukewarm interest. Speed
Nomar Garciaparra
Pitchers
Jason Schmidt
One of the top 5 in baseball
Tim Hudson
A.J. Burnett
Of all the players on this list, Burnett has the best upside. He'll be 29 by Opening Day 2006 and could be one of the game's premiere power pitchers. However, he's never had an injury-free season and has started just 23 games over the last two years. If he's healthy and can maintain his strike out rate of nine per nine innings, expect the boys from Boston and New York to woo A.J. Burnett until he's sick of steak dinners, limo rides, and visits from Derek Jeter, Curt Schilling, and everyone in between.
Bob Wickman
Indians Closer
Kevin Millwood
Kevin Millwood's name has appeared on everyone's list of free agent pitchers for the past few seasons, and every year, he's been a disappointment. It's becoming more and more obvious that he's break-out season of 1999 may just have been a fluke. He struggled last year, giving up more hits than innings pitched for the first time since 2000. His 4.85 ERA was inflated due to the tight new park in Philadelphia, but even his park-adjusted ERA was a career high. If Millwood doesn't show some more consistency, he may just end up signing one-year, $7-million deals until he retires.
B.J. Ryan
Future Star and Baltimores present closer
Estaban Louisa
Marked interest
Matt Morris
Teams will be very wary to approach him.
Billy Wagner
Trevor Hoffman
Still plenty of interest despite injury bug
Todd Jones
Has the stuff to close
Octavio Dotel
Everyones favorite under achiever
Joe Mays
Twins cannot affords to lose him

Red Sox on verge of acquiring Beckett, Lowell

Red Sox on verge of acquiring Beckett, Lowell
The Red Sox and Marlins have come to a tentative agreement on a trade that would send Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell to Boston for shortstop Hanley Ramirez, right-handed prospect Anibal Sanchez and a minor-league pitcher.
The deal is contingent on the finalization of paperwork and all players passing physicals, sources outside the Red Sox organization have told ESPN's Peter Gammons. An official announcement is not expected for a day or two, which leaves open the possibility that it could still fall apart, Gammons said on SportsCenter.
Only some last-minute haggling over dollars appeared to be holding up the deal, a baseball official with knowledge of the discussions told ESPN.com's Jayson Stark. Florida would include cash in the trade to offset some of the $18 million owed to Lowell over the next two seasons.
In return, the Red Sox would give up Ramirez, their much-ballyhooed shortstop prospect, and Sanchez. The Marlins originally had targeted left-hander Jon Lester, but Boston balked at including him in the trade, so the Red Sox agreed to add a second minor leaguer if Florida took Sanchez instead, Stark reports.

The local sports stations have this all but a done deal ( remember A-Rod) so, we'll have to wait and see, it appears at this time it will be Beckett and Mike Lowell (along with his hefty salary) to the red sox for Anabal Sanchez and Hanley ramirez ( wish we were keeping him and gettig rid of Retaria) and a prospect to be named latter to the Marlins, aquiring Beckett would give the 'sox a solid 1-2-3 starting rotation, providing Shilling can resemble something of what he was in 04....

I was ready to call the season a wash, seeing as they still havent signed a GM

Red Sox DH David Ortiz, as quotes by the Associated Press:

?Red Sox OF Manny Ramirez is not returning to Boston?
?Manny is living through a difficult situation (in Boston) that only he and his family know and he no longer wants to play there?
?I spoke with him last week before he left for Brazil and he told me that he wants to go to a team in the West.??
?I found out that that [the Red Sox] are doing everything possible to trade him.??
?in the west, like in the western world??
?or, in the west, like the angels??
?the thing is, from what i can gather out of anaheim, the angels are not sold on bringing him on board, whereas the mets seem to be?this will be an interesting saga?

According to WFAN?s Mike and the Maddog, former Phillies manager Larry Bowa was quoted recently as saying that LHP Billy Wagner is incapable of pitching on back-to-back days, and back-to-back innings, and when he does, his fastball loses several miles-per-hour?
Asked to comment on Bowa?s remarks, Wagner told the radio hosts, ?I don?t care what Larry Bowa said.??
?hahah?nice?
Asked whether more than two teams are pursuing him, Wagner said, ?I think there?s more?I believe Boston, New York, I think Philadelphia and Atlanta?s still on the back-burner.??
Regarding his past comments about not liking New York City, Wagner said, ?There?s no secret that I?m not a city boy, I?m definitely from the country?but that plays no role in where I?m gonna play.??
Lastly, asked whether these negotiations will be wrapped up in days or weeks, he responded, ?I have no idea?you?ll have to ask my agent Bean [Stringfellow] and Omar [Minaya] on how long it?s gonna take.??

In regards to manny, Randolph stated before the trade deadline that if Manny were to come to the Mets he would not tolerate any of his antics. I don't know if Manny would be happy anywhere he goes at this point. I wonder about San Franscico though. It's in the west and SF is going to lose their slugging leftfielder with an attitude problem within a year if not less. Manny would fit right in.

With Wagner, one local paper had him quoted as saying that each career move he has made has brought him closer and closer to playing in a major city. There is also almost any kind of town he could want within an hour from the stadium. I'm still optomistic even if what Larry Bowa says about him is true. Any amount of Wagner throwing well is better than Looper throwing injured. And we have Heilman who showed that he could potentially save games last September.

Latest News:

Carlos Delagado and 7 million dollars to the Mets for pitcher Yosemuri Petit and First Baseman catcher Mike Jacobs.

Arron Rowand to the Phillies for First Beseman Jim Thome.

First Delagado. This makes me think Manny stays in Boston. The mets will stop pursuit of Manny unless they trade Delagado and the 7 million for Manny. Which I doubt even though with the loss of Millar the Sox dont have a first baseman. (And neither will the mets without Jacobs).
You have to make the Delagado deal for Jacobs and Petit. Its a no brainer. In this case, Minaya capitalized on the values of Petit and Jacobs, while keeping his most prized prospect, OF Lastings Milledge. If Minaya softens his pursuit of Ramirez, Milledge will remain a Met. Milledge is seen by many in baseball as a star in the making. With Wright, Reyes and Milledge, and a new crop of young pitchers on the way, such as LHP Philip Humber, RHP Mike Pelfrey and RHP Gaby Hernandez. The Mets are finally in the right direction it would seem.
Now second base and the corner outfielders will need to be addressed.
Billy Wagner will come to New York only if "My wife is happy there" .
The mets are looking at Baez from Tampa Bay Devil Rays and Baltimores BJ Ryan. The latter of whom I think will be the best fit for the mets.
The Sox can still look at Aubrey Huff from the Devil Rays to play first base. His name has been mentioned in talks with the mets. Now that they have gotten Delgado, barring a blockbuster 3 way with the Red Sox and the Devil Rays they still have starting pitching (Trachsel Seo and Heilman) to dangle to the Devil Rays or Orioles.

Thome for Rowand. Phillies get youth and a centerfielder. Sox get a DH replacement for Frank Thomas or first base security if Konerko leaves. Lets hope last years injury plagued season for Thome wasnt due to something missing in his diet. Like clean and clear. ;)
Podsednik moves back to center his natural position so their pursuit of Juan Pierre fizzles. Now they'll be in the hunt for Brian Giles with the Yankees.

Reports out of Boston that Seattle and Ichiro is a possibility for Manny. Manny is a 10 and 5 and can Veto it.

Omar Minaya has offered contracts to 2 free agent catchers for 2 years at 8 million per to Benjie Molina and Ramon Hernandez. Hernandez is 4 years younger at 28 years old. Shrewd move to keep the price down. Whomever jumps first gets it.

With the lack of free agent talent available expect the winter meetings that begin next week to be full of trades and even some blockbusters. This years free agent pool is the worst one in 20 years. Most teams will be quite busy filling holes.

Paul Konerko signs 5 year deal with White Sox worth 60 million, rejects 5 years at 65 with Baltimore Orioles.
Oakland A's Agree to Three-Year Deal With Estaban Loiaza
The deal, worth $21,375,000, includes a 2009 club option. Loaiza went 12-10 with a 3.77 ERA for the Washington Nationals last season, the second-best win total in his 11-year major league career. He won 21 games for the Chicago White Sox in 2003.
SAN DIEGO - Right fielder Brian Giles reached a preliminary agreement Wednesday night to re-sign with his hometown San Diego Padres for $30 million over three years. The two-time All-Star will earn $9 million per season from 2006-08, with a $9 million option for 2009 that could raise the value of the deal to $36 million over four years. The club has a $3 million buyout for 2009.
Free agent infielder Abraham Nunez and the Phillies agreed Tuesday to a $3.35 million. Nunez likely will platoon at third with David Bell, who hit just .199 against right-handers last season. Nunez hit .277 against right-handers last year.
For his career, Nunez has hit .248 with 16 homers and 161 RBIs in eight seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates and one with the Cardinals.
The Philadelphia Phillies moved to strengthen their depleted bullpen, agreeing Wednesday to an $800,000, one-year contract with free agent reliever Julio Santana.
The 31-year-old right-hander, who got $800,000 in a deal that includes performance bonuses, was in 41 games last season for Milwaukee and went 3-5 with a 4.50 ERA. In 42 innings, Santana allowed 34 hits, walked 19, struck out 49, and opponents batted .221 against
Rumor Mill Reports are that the agent for Kyle Farnsworth has told that to the Atlanta braves that his client has agreed to sign with the Yankees.

Tom Gordon Signs with the Phillies for 3 years at 18 million. The Yankees and another team, believed to be Texas, made a late run at signing Gordon. But when the Phillies offered to guarantee him a third year and allow him to go back to closing, that apparently sealed the deal.

Looks like the Marlins periodic firesale came early. It seems everytime they put together a decent team they trade the core of the team away. After '97 when they won the series, After '03 when they won the series they started trading everyone away again though it wasnt quite near the size of '97 and now after they went 83-79 two consecutive years they're starting to trade everyone away again.

The Braves have been staying fairly quiet. i haven't heard any big news comign from Atlanta except that it looks like they will be losing Furcal to the Cubs (decision is expected to be made this weekend).

The only NL East team to make big improvements so far have been the Metropolitans. Phillies Marlins and possibly the Braves have only lost key players, and the Nationals have been very quiet except for signing Marlon Anderson which isn't that big of news except it takes from the Mets bench.

Next year is almost upon us.

Lots of moves on the hot stove the last few days. The winter meetings have begun with some serious moves. The Blue Jays look like they want to contend seriously with the Yankees and Red sox in the AL east. Will add latest updates later.

And there were 11 free-agent signings Wednesday
There were nine trades Wednesday.
In the biggest, the Texas Rangers reached a tentative deal to send All-Star second baseman Alfonso Soriano to the Washington Nationals for outfielders Brad Wilkerson and Terrmel Sledge, plus minor league pitcher Armando Galarraga. The deal is subject to the players passing physicals.
Red Sox deal Renteria to Braves for third base prospect Andy Marte The move left Boston without a shortstop, but Red Sox senior adviser Bill Lajoie denied a much-rumored deal that would wheel Marte to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays for Julio Lugo. Lajoie said he expected to see Marte play for the Red Sox this year, putting him in the outfield or first base if it's necessary to get his bat in the lineup.Marte, 22, batted .275 with 20 homers and 74 RBI in 109 games in Triple-A last season, and .140 with no homers and four RBI in 24 games with the Braves. He is rated as the top prospect in the Braves organization by Baseball America. Boston will pay $8 million of the $26 million Renteria is owed for the next three seasons. In addition, the Red Sox must pay the $3 million buyout if his $11 million option for 2009 is declined.
Boston also sent catcher Doug Mirabelli to San Diego for second baseman Mark Loretta

The Dodgers are starting to look like the team to beat in the West and the Cubs in the Central with the signing on Juan Pierre are starting to look good as long as Wood and Prior stay healthy as unlikely as that sounds. The Nats have also strengthened their team, but i still think no one yet compares to the team from Flushing. boxing.gif

I can't wait for next season to start already. But the WBC will help. Is anyone planning on watching that?
