Are there any real advantages to buying a kayak with a camo color? I figure that the bright yellow is better so you're more visible to motor boaters, etc. The camo does look cool, but I don't see a good reason to choose that color. Any opinions...?
Colour is both a personal and safety question. Depending on where you fish and whether you will experience a lot of boat traffic, I suggest going with yellow. I have an orange Hobie and am always nervous about being seen as we are a very small object in the water especially if there are waves (you didn't mention if you are in the salt or fresh). I know while actively fishing off the bridges in Virginia Beach where there is a lot of boat traffic, you need to make sure you are visible.
So my vote is yellow but that is my personal opinion.
In salt I'd definaty go bright colors. Salt needs a higher degree of safety due to motorheads and waves.
In freshwater where motorboats are not allowed and there are no waves, I'd go camo just because I like to keep a low profile.
Agreed on the bright yellow. Those are my same reasons. Some lakes up my way back home (Ontario) allow boats as well and I like to keep visible on those as well, e.g. Lake Ontario.
Bright colors do get dirty fast. My yaks have a textured finish that seems to collect dirt. You will find that an electric power washer is great to get into all the crevices, and speeds clean up.
That has been my experiance, but I'm a clean freak and like to thoughly clean my gear after a salt outing. Fresh water just gets the hose if needed. Everything gets an end of year power washing, tune up and fix up for the following year.
I even take a heat gun to smooth out any major scratches in the hull. I feel that it helps with a nicer glide, even if it's unnoticeable to me.
