about to make a rod/reel purchase

hey guys,new to the forum and saltwater fishing..i plan on heading to plum island next weekend to try my luck.im about to purchase a penn slammer 760L live liner reel and a 9' st.croix mojo surf rod,am i making a good purchase?

Sounds good. What's the rating on the rod and what are you using on it....plugs, chunks, eels, ?

the rating on the rod is 10-20 lb line and 1-4oz lure weight..my plan is to mostly use clams and cut up herring but would like to try out some plugs with it also..

well i made the order.i did change the rod to the 3/4-4 oz instead of the 1-4..

I have the 760L and the mojo 10'6 spinning rod. It worked great over the summer. A couple things: 1. The rod is not split 50/50. If you travel by car, be prepared for it to barely fit. I have an expedition and it takes up from the back to touching the drivers seat. It's in an approx 3 foot and 7 foot sections. 2. The guides are small. You hear alot that the first guide must be large on a spinner for line collection. 3. You will most likely not be able to use a shock leader. Along with #2, the knot slams against each guide making it weak. 4. The 760L is pretty big and barely fits in the reel mount. I am thinking about going down to the 560L.

Don't get me wrong, I love the rod and it's well constructed although in Mexico. I plan to pick up another 10'6 spinner and the bigger casting, I believe it's 12' by next spring.
