For stripers you don't need a high gear ratio reel untill you have a monster steaming towards you but most of the time you wanna fish slow so lower ratio is what you want in a spinner.
I am trying to learn to use convention reels. I have a shakespeare tw30l levelwind it's a 4.2:1. It felt slow possible because I did not fill the reel with line. I only caught one striper with it and it was no problem getting him in the boat. My proplem has been with the blues and blacks. I recently bought some vintage penn's on ebay. a 309 (3:1), a 210 (4:1) , and a 112h 3/0 senator special (? : ?).
What are ideal gear ratio's for different fish and lures?
Yes RJ hit it on the head. The higher gears are for speed and the lower gears are for power. Fast palegics need fast ratios. - slower stronger heavier need winching.
