Gulf St Laurence / Northumberland Strait

Legality of it all... Just read that the coastal waters on the Northumberland Strait and Gulf of St Laurence are closed to Striped Bass fishing (no open season exists). I know this applies to the inland waters of NB and NS along the Strait, but does anyone know if it also applies to say the surf fishing along the coastal beaches? Someone help out the noob...

Existing Protection

Striped bass currently receive protection through the federal Fisheries Act. There are no commercial fisheries for striped bass in Maritime waters but they can be taken as bycatch in other commercial fisheries such as gaspereau and eel on inland waters or gillnet and trap/ weir fisheries along the coast. Management measures of the recreational fishery, regulated under the Fisheries Act, provides for daily bag limits, gear and minimum length restrictions and seasonal closures.
Recreational angling is permitted year round in the tidal waters of the Bay of Fundy and along the Atlantic Coast of Nova Scotia. For inland waters, angling is permitted during set summer months, except for those waters draining into the Gulf of St. Lawrence and Northumberland Strait where angling for striped bass is not permitted.

If you do accidentally catch a fish you know to be protected under SARA, return it to the water.

That is the very article I mentioned reading in my Thread. My confusion was from the last sentence you posted reading:

"For inland waters, angling is permitted .... except for those waters draining into the Gulf of St. Lawrence and Northumberland Strait..."

Does that mean that only the inland waters are restricted, or all striper fishing in the Strait period?

What this means is that the fishery is closed in all waters (rivers) that empty in the Gulf of St Lawrence (including Northumberland Strait ). The Gulf salt waters are indeed closed too.

In New Brunswick, striped bass fishing is only open in the rivers emptying in the Bay of Fundy, or in the Bay of Fundy itself.
