NY stripers???
When do the stripers tend to start running up through long island. I am from the cape but want to make a trip down to NY - I NEED STRIPERS NOOOOWWWW. I have access to a small plane and saw that i could fly over to Montauk in about 45 min but does anybody have good idea of when they'll be at the west end of long island?

Re: NY stripers???
...you know what, if somebody from Maine asked me when the stripers start running through the Canal I guess I would be reluctant to broadcast it on a website too - see you in March (hopefully)!

Re: NY stripers???
I am in Staten Island, which is 120 miles west of Montauk. We normally have good bass fishing beginning the first week of May. They are here sooner, but it can be hit and miss. You can figure that the fish will gradually move east. The Rockaways get fish around the same time we do, but it can take some time for them to move further east.
Hope this helps

Re: NY stripers???
Generally you get them around the later part of April to May, but that depends on the water temps.
I am from Maine myself . . . ever been around Bridgton area?

Re: NY stripers???
Actually there are bass there now at the local power plant. But it's tough to get there nowadays with no parking in the area.
As the others mentioned depending on water temps they usually arrive in mid to late April with some of the best fishing of the year taking place in late May, when all of those big bass make their run out of the Hudson River.
It can't come soon enough!

Re: NY stripers???
Thanks for the help guys, I guess i will have to bump my plans to come out a little further - hoping i could cheat the system a little but its probably not worth making the trip before they start rolling in.
This is a great site, i hope to meet some of you guys on the canal this summer.

We'll definitely hook up at some point. Come the end of May I'll probably be down there about once a week,,, whenever I'm not fishing Rhodie You should look into some of the Got Stryper soft plastics. On a 3oz jighead they're killer in the ditch

Re: NY stripers???
The got stryper rubberslook pretty cool - i am interested to see what that cork srew like body does in the water. Thanks for the suggestion. This spring i am going to concentrate on working a bucktail right and rigging some eel skin plugs and jigs - i know a couple old salts willing to shed some light. Definitely keeping a canal log this season too, fortunantely i usually get to go atleast once a day.

Re: NY stripers???
Talk about a little traveling this season, what are the
fishing shows on LI this Spring and where are they.
I will be on the island this month visiting family and
could hit a show or two. Made my bones at Montauk
many, many years ago and would like to catch up
with the local wits.
