Almeida Memorial North Shore Striped Bass Tourney
Preparations are under way for the fourth annual Leo Almeida Memorial North Shore Striped Bass Tournament. This charity event will be held Labor Day Weekend, Sept. 2-4. 2006 All proceeds will benefit North Shore area food pantries.
For an entry fee of $10, fishermen and women can compete for cash grand prizes in one of two divisions - "From Boat" and "From Shore or Surf." There is also a Junior Division for kids 15 and under. Entrants other than grand-prize winners will be eligible for a second-chance raffle, which includes more than 40 prizes donated by marine-related businesses, artisans and restaurants across the North Shore.
A dozen North Shore bait shops and other businesses have also agreed to sell entry tickets and serve as tournament weigh stations.
This one-of-a-kind fishing event is the only contest designed especially for striped-bass fishermen and women north of Boston. Last year's tournament had close to 350 entrants. In the past three years, the tournament has raised more than $10,000 for area food pantries, including the Cape Ann Food Pantry in Gloucester, Our Neighbor's Table in Amesbury and the Danvers People to People pantry.

My dad started this tournament in 2003, however, passed away prior to its first running, this will be the fifth annual. Although he never got to see it happen I am sure he would be happy with the results of the past tournaments. Over the past three years we have raised over $14,000 for the local food pantries.
Due to the tremendous support from the community and vendors at large we have a huge raffle for all entrants that did not win a prize in which we give away gift certificates/fishing tackle/services. So even if you don't have the biggest fish you still have a great chance to win a prize.

Striped bass tourney remembers Almeida, helps Food Pantry

The Leo Almeida Memorial North Shore Striped Bass Tournament will be held Labor Day weekend, Aug. 30-Sept. 1 2008 - to raise money to fight hunger on Cape Ann and other local communities. Now in its sixth year, the tournament has raised $19,000 so far.
Prizes up to $500 will be awarded in various categories, including boat, shore/surf and for children under 16. A raffle of dozens of prizes will also be held. Those who wish to donate to the pantries can enter and will also be eligible to win raffle prizes.
Entry fee is $10. Tickets are available at Winchester Fishing in Gloucester and at Fin and Feather in Essex. Ticket sales end Friday, Aug. 29.
The Cape Ann Food Pantry on Emerson Avenue has been feeding local residents for over 25 years. The tournament will also benefit the People to People Food Pantry in Danvers and Our Neighbor’s Table in Amesbury.
Leo Almeida was a lifelong North Shore resident whose commitment to public service was matched by his love of fishing. He died in 2003, shortly before the first North Shore Striped Bass Tournament that he organized.
