Re: leaders
Hi Surfnut,
It really all depends on the area you're fishing. If you're fishing around a lot of sharp structure or dealing with a lot of toothy fish like bluefish, a 50# flouro leader will probably do OK, just be ready to change it when it gets nicked up. If you're fishing a sandy beach, in clear water, and not battling bluefish, 50# test is probably a bit of overkill.
My usual haunt is a river with sand/mud bottom, but with lots of rock piles & mussels. I'm usually using 25-30# braid, with a 30# flouro leader. I always have some heavier leaders around though, just in case the blues start shredding em.
Probably not going to hurt you to err on the side of caution and go a little heavy, unless you're fishing in very clear water where heavier lines are more visible.
That's my 2 cents,,, lets see what others say...

Re: leaders
I agree with baitrunner and Roc.
Plugging I try to get away with as light as possible, usually 30# flouro but I'll go up to 50# if the blues are around.
Baitfishing is a different story, it's all about the cow. I'll go as heavy as possible with 65# to 80# braid and up to 80# leader, 8 to 10 oz of lead and a whole bunker with the tail cut off.

Re: leaders
During the season, and where I'm fishing will determine what # test leader I will use. I'll use 40# early, then 50# when the toothy gritters show up. And in the Fall I'll go up to 60# fishing the RI rocks, for the big gals.
