Default Garcia Mitchell 306

I just came across what appears to be a new, never fished Garcia Mitchell 306 with a bail, no box or paper. I found it in a furniture consignment shop of all places. $15. I don't anything about them. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Good deal
Not an expensive reel but a good strong durable reel (so long as you keep the salt rinsed off).

You got it for about half price, figure $30 including any shipping.

Thanks, Sudsy. I'll pick it up tomorrow when I get the other piece of furniture I bought. I gave up scuba diving for surf casting last year and rinsing the salt from scuba gear is religion so I'm well trained! I'll give the reel a try! Thanks for your thoughts on it. Anyone else?

This is it. Seems ok. A couple of questions. I have never put line on a reel. From what I read I understand it's "backer" first. Is that always mono, how much and what test? How is it fastened to the spool? Then splice braid to the mono, 20lb or so? All help is appreciated!

Also, what Sudsy said previously about adversion to salt. Is this a good candidate for packing the gear box with marine grease? Thanks.

Hi Kevin,
That eggbeater looks like it's in good shape! Nice find! They were designed for mono line, not braid, but original fused 20lb test Fireline should be OK on it. If you're going that way with it, tie a 10 yard length of 17 or 20lb test mono to the spool, wind it on tight, then use an albright or uni-uni knot to splice the braid on to it.
And yes, you can pack the gear box with marine grease, but don't pack it too tight or it will push out through the seals.
Cheers!
Jake

Thumbs up Re: Garcia Mitchell 306

Thanks for the instruction, Jake. I might get to it this weekend. And thanks especially for the link to the thread about the history, design and manufacturing of the reel. That's a keeper!
