Lake Nockamixon Fisheries report
Vance Dunbar Bucks County waterways conservation officer for the PFBC.

Dale Machesek Columnist for phillyblurbs.com

The Pennsylvania fish commission Report
60,000 walleye fry in Nockamixon since June
1,450 tiger muskies stocked in May
1.45 million striped bass put in the lake in 2005.
It wasn't that many years ago the man-made, 1,450-acre lake was regarded, justifiably, as the septic tank for Upper Bucks.
"Nockamixon was designed to be a family lake," Dunbar said. "With 20 horsepower (motor) restrictions, few wakes, turtles, muskrats, beavers and striped bass, this is a great place to enjoy. The plant diversity is how you measure water quality, and Nockamixon has a good variety of plant diversity. In the early '80s, there was virtually no plant life in Nockamixon, but now the species diversity and amount of plant growth is spectacular."
Lake Nockamixon is home to at least 28 species of fish - possibly as many as 34 - and 30 types of aquatic vegetation. The report received was from an annual study to determine the health of several specific fish species. Most notably, the channel catfish is now reproducing in the lake.
From June 19-21, PFBC biologists conducted a trap netting survey (six nets) in the lake to determine if channel catfish are reproducing enough to support the fishery without stocking. Seventy-seven channel catfish ranging in lengths from 5 to 29 inches were collected.
Nockamixon catch rates indicate channel catfish stockings have been successful in building a great population in the lake. Twelve were collected (16 percent of the channel catfish catch) that were the result of spawning between 2004 and 2006, years when no channel catfish fingerlings had been stocked in the lake. Their presence indicated stockings are not likely to be necessary to support the lake's channel catfish fishery.
Nockamixon State Park, which surrounds the 18-mile shoreline
You can access the lake from every side. Ridge Road follows the southern shoreline and Route 563 follows the northern side. There are numerous boat launches and access areas. Stop at the park office on Route 563 to get a map of the park and all the rules and regulations. The park, as most Pennsylvania state parks, offers cabin rentals so you can enjoy the area for overnight adventures.
A full description of the park, lake, and all related activities and services can be found at www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/parks/nockamixon.aspx or by calling the park office at (215) 529-7300.
