Default What size was your first hybrid?

I got my first one on Monroe Lake IN and thought I had a monster. I weighed in at just under two pounds. I kept catching fish that size for two years until I figured out that I needed to graduate to larger baits. Now I never catch small wipers. If I catch at all, they are usually in the 3-8 pound class.

I think this was my first:

I caught it jigging for crappie off my yak in a snowstorm.
there's a couple more smaller ones, then in May of this year they got bigger, as I was fishing on the Ohio River below Meldahl dam

A 2 W : Addicted to WIPER!!!!!!!

Take a close look at this individual, this is what stripers and wipers will do to you: he's beside himself, face contorted, falling out of boat. Oblivious to the dangers of the boils behind and around him. A 2 W

The first hybrid i caught was on a big redfin trout pattern and weighed in at 18 1/2 pounds and was caught on the Hiwassee River. I have been hooked ever since. We had to pull anchor and actually chase the fish down river about a 100yds before we could even slow him down and have a chance at landing the pig. I could have been slapped in the face for the next week or so and the grin would have still been there.

Whoa!
That would have been an Ohio state record, how close was it in TN?

I am in full agreement; they do make an impression, regardless of their size. Even a small wiper doesn't know it is small. But 18 1/2 pounds, now that if a first time wiper! The Indiana record is just over 22 pounds, and it was undoubtedly taken in relatively shallow water, nothing like the depths you guys get in TN. In March 2006 my family and I fished on Cherokee Lake near Knoxville and we got into wipers in 49 feet of water. They ranged in size from 6-10 pounds, and when they hit, they mostly snapped our lines until we figured out how to keep a real loose drag. That mono is no match for a fiesty wiper. I don't know what we would have done with an 18 1/2 pounder, but I can easily envision the smiles that brought one you boated the critter.

I love the look on that guy's face, Nu. The amazing thing is that it does not matter how many fish that size you catch, the look comes back time and again. They make all other fishing seem, well, tame by comparison.

The really nice thing about wipers is that they are fishing's best kept secrets. You look and look for information, and there is not much out there. I love it!

Slo, that's Todd, inventer of the Gizz4 from Smack Tackle.
That look is permanently fixed on Todd's face, he's a scream to be around, because everytime you look at him you bust out laughing, we keep him in the corner just for kicks!

My first hybrid experience was at Salt Creek spillway at Lake Monroe, and I haven't been the same since!

Thumbs up Re: What size was your first hybrid?

The Rocord in Tenn is 23 lbs and 3 oz
Heck i didn't even know what a hybrid was at the time i just thougt it was striper. This was the first striper/hybrid that i had ever caught period. I have known for a couple of years that they come up in the river, but i hadn't fished for them yet. We always just fish for trout. So while some of my guide trips for trout i started looking for them. It didn't take me long to find em, once i knew where they were we launched a drifter and the rest is history.
one of the things that a bunch of the old timers around here kept telling was that once you hook one, you will be ruined. LOL( understatement )
Its like puttin a hook into the back of 4 wheel drive and trying to hold on as it takes off.

And it doesn't matter what state you're fishing in, you hook a wiper, there's no question you got something special on the line. Suddenly you realize on fo two things: either the fish is just too much for you or you are convinced that big, touch fish are your chosen prey. They don't leave you much middle ground.

I appreciate you sharing that, Stan. I can just picture you cruising up the river with that what-in-the-hell-have-I-got-here look, all the while wondering if you'll ever see the thing on the surface. They are what fishing is all about.
