Has anyone caught Hickory Shad in the upper Hudson i.e. Albany, Troy? I understand they are legal to keep and use as cut bait for stripers in N.Y. unlike the American Shad which are protected.
I have caught them up here. Not a lot, maybe one every few years on a sabiki. And I think you can use them for bait. The problem is you can't use shad darts without possibly being accused of targeting american shad, and so if you try and just use a sabiki, your arm will fall off releasing all the herring you will catch.
also this far north - the Stripers seemed to be keyed in on the Herring instead of the Shad.... besides - Hickory Shad Hudson River and tributaries north of Tappan Zee Bridge Aug 1 through Nov 30
