Ex New york hudson river striper fisherman, now a CT resident.

So I just moved to New Milford CT. a month ago from Poughkeepsie NY. I lived 10 mins from the river in NY. Now I need to learn all the new shore spots here on the CT river, or Housatonic. Can anyone tell me what the regulations are for using live herring in CT? Herring were plentiful in the Hudson river to just cast a swimbait and just net the Herring following it. I hope the same thing can be done in the CT rivers? The season is almost here and I want to gather as much info I can and give it hell this season and see how it goes. Any info would be appreciated, Thanks guys, Kyle

The taking of alewife and blueback is prohibited from Connecticut waters.
This emergency closure will be in place through at least March 2011 and will likely be extended.

Thanks for the info. Can anyone give me a few pointers on how to catch them on lures or other baits? I dont have a boat, so ill be on shore. I see some guys fish for the small schoolies in the river year round.

There's holdover stripers all year round down in the Housy. A lot of shore fisherman use sandworms or chunks of bunker or shad. Others use swimming plugs and slug-go type lures. I haven't fished up by the Dam, but you hear of big stripers being caught there every year. Might want to take a ride up there in another few weeks and chat with some of the locals.
