Long Island, Great South Bay Overnight locations

I am planning a trip soon to go surf casting for stripers around Robert moses, democrat point area of Long Island. My question is are there any areas in this region where it would be possible to setup a tent and stay the night? Are there are permits required or regulations for this? I know there are for democrat point but not sure for other areas. How about the beaches west of Sore thumb? I would be boating to the area most likely but my boat is too small to sleep more than 1 person comfortably.

Hi Joe!
4X4 Permits are needed for the beaches all around that area. You are not permitted to set up a tent and sleep overnight on the beaches. Although, many do, more so at Demo because it doesn't get policed very much. Good luck!

I am going to provide a suggestion with a quote from a close friend of mine that will be fishing down there in the middle of October....


"If I really need to sleep, I will dig a hole in the sand and bury myself"

In otherwords if the fishing comes together while your down there you will not be worried about putting that tent up.
