In Michigan fisherman have become pro-active in places where the poaching is rampant and the fish particularly vulnerable like the river watch volunteers who patrol the little rivers and creeks that feed mullet and black lake (at the very tip of the lower peninsula) during the sturgeon spawn. These several hundred pound fish which spaw in very shallow water are very vulnerable to hand spears and are very tempting to caviar connesuers...There are similar volunteer groups for the big sturgeon spawning rivers in N/ Minnesota lakes. In Mi. a group has just formed that watches tippy dam on the Big Manistee River where thousands of spawning kings stack up and are subject to snaggers. The members take turns watching the river during prime time carying cell phones and they wear bright prange vests so just their presence when fishing scares off the poachers. The snaggers who come out w/ pool sticks, 80 lb braid, an 8 oz. weight, and a chain of trebles just walk straight back to their trucks when they see someone at their hole with one of those evests. If u use over 12lb test u are not going to hook many kings legally in the the upper waters of Mi's clear rivers.
Just an idea for those of u who know of similar situations where there are very vulnerable fish and lots of poachers.
