Planer Board Question

I've never used them before. For smaller planers (freshwater), do you run separate lines: one for the planer board and one for the bait line? Or do you put the planer on the same line like a bobber/baloon? If it's best to use separate lines, what type of line/rigging device do you use for the planer board? Thanks for any advice.

separate line, you will need a release,
think of them like a downrigger only they go out to the side

Yes you do, You will let out your desired amount of line, and then attach your board to the line. Set it in the water, let it fall back, lock your reel in, and watch your board swing out to the side.
