Hurricane effects on the river
The river analysis has been part of a student program that Lamont-Doherty has sponsored for several years. The annual event is co-sponsored by the state Department of Environmental Conservation's Hudson River Estuary Program as part of the effort to protect and restore the region's coastal habitats and recognize their environmental, recreational and economic benefits.
Impacts that significant weather events can have on the river system :
Last year, for example, the DEC said that young striped bass were most common in brackish water from the Tappan Zee Bridge south.
They saw significant differences in water chemistry, especially in conductivity and salinity because of all the rainfall we've had and the freshwater flushing of the river and they were amazed to see that the salt front was below Croton Point, and last year it was up by Bear Mountain.
