Outstanding read, Jim. Great explanations of the evolution of cane rods and gut lines. I can't imagine what people thought of those guys trying to go toe-to-toe with a salmon on a sixteen foot rod, and 32 feet of horsehair tied to the tip. Then again, the "battle" was probably quick enough that nobody even noticed.
