The first U.S. Patent bill was signed into law on April 10, 1790 by President George washington. Once a patent has been issued it remains in effect for 17 years.
Aluminum was introduced in the 1880s. Duralium , a strong-corrosive resistent aluminum alloy, was used as a material in the manufacturing of many open-face spinning reels from the late 1940s to today.
Bakelite was introduced in 1909. It was used as a spool material by many manufacturers of open-faced spinning reels before and after the use of aluminum.
Stainless steel was introduced in 1916. It was used in many parts of the open faced spinning reel.
Some Italian open-faced spinning reels listed as extremely rare have never been found. Only referenced in a book written by Mr. Angelo Bruni in 1933 in Italy.
Nylon was introduced in 1938, manufactured by dupont. It was first used form women's stockings and the toothbrush. Nylon monofilament line was developed by E.I. Dupont in 1938.
Germany invades Poland in 1939. Great Britain and France declare war on Germany. Thus the manufacturing of fishing tackle comes to a halt.
The first company to commercially produce monofilament line was Ashaway in 1939.
Dec. 7, 1941 The Japanese attack Pearl Harbor. The U.S. enters World War11 also putting a halt to the production of fishing tackle in the U.S. most fishing tackle manufacturers wewre now making products for the war effort. It would not be until the late 1940's when U.S. manufactureres would again start production of fishing tackle.
Teflon was introduced in 1949. It was used for drag washers and line guide roller bushings on spinning reels.
On July 1, 1963 the U.S started using 5 digit zip codes.
Some British Spinning reels are marked with a patent number, in some cases the last two numbers of the patent are the year of the patent in which they were manufactured. Examples: Prov.patent no 5739/46. patent number 608454
