The US standard railroad gauge (distance between the rails) is 4 feet, 8.5 inches. That's an...

The US standard railroad gauge (distance between the rails) is 4 feet, 8.5 inches. That's an exceedingly odd number.

Why was that gauge used? Because that's the way they built them in England, and English expatriates designed the US railroads.

Why did the English build them like that? Because the first rail lines were built by the same people who built the pre-railroad tramways, and that's the gauge they used.

Why did 'they' use that gauge then? Because the people who built the tramways used the same jigs and tools that they had used for building wagons, which used that wheel spacing.

Why did the wagons have that particular odd wheel spacing? Well, if they tried to use any other spacing, the wagon wheels would break on some of the old, long distance roads in England, because that's the spacing of the wheel ruts.

So who built those old rutted roads? Imperial Rome built the first long distance roads in Europe (including England ) for their legions. Those roads have been used ever since.

And the ruts in the roads? Roman war chariots formed the initial ruts, which everyone else had to match for fear of destroying their wagon wheels. Since the chariots were made for Imperial Rome, they were all alike in the matter of wheel spacing. Therefore the United States standard railroad gauge of 4 feet, 8.5 inches is derived from the original specifications for an Imperial Roman war chariot. Bureaucracies live forever.

So the next time you are handed a specification/procedure/process and wonder 'What horse's ass came up with this?' , you may be exactly right. Imperial Roman army chariots were made just wide enough to accommodate the rear ends of two war horses. (Two horses' asses.) Now, the twist to the story:

When you see a Space Shuttle sitting on its launch pad, there are two big booster rockets attached to the sides of the main fuel tank. These are solid rocket boosters, or SRBs. The SRBs are made by Thiokol at their factory in Utah The engineers who designed the SRBs would have preferred to make them a bit fatter, but the SRBs had to be shipped by train from the factory to the launch site. The railroad line from the factory happens to run through a tunnel in the mountains, and the SRBs had to fit through that tunnel. The tunnel is slightly wider than the railroad track, and the railroad track, as you now know, is about as wide as two horses' behinds.

So, a major Space Shuttle design feature of what is arguably the world's most advanced transportation system was determined over two thousand years ago by the width of a horse's ass. And you thought being a horse's ass wasn't important? Ancient horse's asses control almost everything... and

CURRENT Horses Asses are controlling everything else.

Question. I have two 850's in excellant condition always well maintained. Main use in the surf. I am thinking of switching to braid. I have heard and read the older Penn SS models are not braid friendly and MAY stress the reel. If true why? Can this be mitigated, eg mono backing ect? Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the 19th International Fly Tying Symposium. This year’s theme is "Big Fish Flies." We all have a fly that seems to outfish all others when we hook the fish of the day, or the fish of the year. Maybe we won’t tell you where or when we landed that monster fish, but most of us are proud to show you the fly we created that tricked that wise old fish. Sure, it could have been luck, the right tide, a perfect cast, or other factors, but the fly matters most. And for a tier to succeed with his own pattern is much more satisfying than fishing bought flies. Even if the fly is a copy of a reliable pattern by another tier, as long as you tied it, it’s still O.K. The symposium will be a wealth of tying knowledge and big fish are sure to be in your future with the patterns you create or duplicate.

Hey guys, I live in the central valley of california. Everyone fishes for striper here in the reservoir and canals. I fish alot of LMB, but in the winter time that slows to a stop while people are slammin stripers! I have been asking a ton of people about a striper setup and have been getting a ton of different answers. I recently found this site so I thought id ask here (im sure you guys are sick and tired of this question so I am sorry in advance). I plan on throwing alot of topwater plugs and spooks and what not, along with deadsticking cut anchovies often and possibly live bait every once in a while. I was recommended the 8 foot inter coastal ugly stick paired up with the 10lb pflueger president reel. How is this setup? I also have a brand new 5000 Abu Round reel that I wouldn't mind pairing up with a rod recommended to me.

I need to get a VHF for my 20' center console and I'm hoping someone can give me a recommendation. My main criteria is that it's as small as possible because I don't have much room in my console. Other than that, I'd like something reliable with decent range. It will need to be water resistant because my boat is small and take a lot of spray from time to time (I do have a T top). I don't go off shore much but I plan on using a decent antenna because hopefully I'll be 5 - 10 miles out once in a while.

I appreciate any recommendations for a small reliable VHF. Thanks!

Its been very windy the last several days coming out of the Northeast and the waves were up to 11 feet at one point. All those waves pounding the Narragansett shoreline stirred up all kinds of sand and silt. We went out for Tautog and the area north of Point Judith and Little League rock first but didn't get a bite even after hitting three spots. Then went directly to the Rockpile and caught 40 fish total but with only 10 keepers. What was pretty annoying was that a lot of these fish were close to keeper size but just not close enough. Not really a surprise since the water was a sandy brown color from all the bottom being stirred up. There were big 6' swells coming in from the east all morning. It will be a couple days before it clears out and fishing gets better.

This is my world, the world of Jimmy Z, surfcaster.
You'll find me out on the shore and jetties of RI and Ct from May till November, doing what I love the best.
Targeting the Striped Bass.
I start my season at this spot, Meigs Point near Clinton Ct.
And I find it appropriate to end at this same location.
It was a decent season as seasons go. It was fruitful, and eventful. It's a place I escape to, a place to be one with my Father. He has given me a passion for this thing I do, and I am truly grateful to Him for this.
As the sun set today, I thought about this season, the friends I do this with, and the upcoming winter months ahead.
With the fading sunlight, I took one last cast, and called it a season.

Eric Gagne Will Attempt A Comeback
Eric Gagne told Canadian reporters that he will attempt to get back into the big leagues next year, and wouldn't rule out a return to the Dodgers. Gagne reportedly said that he is willing to sign a minor league contract, and wouldn't mind pitching in Double or Triple-A.
Gagne, 34 in January, last pitched in the majors with the Brewers back in 2008, spending last season with the Quebec Capitales of the independent Can Am League. Working as a starter for the first time since 2001, Gagne threw 102.2 innings (17 starts), striking out 64 and posting a 4.65 ERA for the team with the best record and highest attendance in the league

183 players are eligible to file during the 15-day period for players that ends next week. The list already includes World Series heroes Johnny Damon and Hideki Matsui, along with such familiar names as Orlando Cabrera, Mark DeRosa, Chone Figgins, Vladimir Guerrero, Matt Holliday, John Smoltz and Orlando Hudson.

Among the notable players that have yet to file are pitchers Andy Pettitte and Randy Johnson, and catcher Ramon Hernandez. Pettitte and Johnson have not announced if they will return for the 2010 season, but there is sure to be interest if they decide to come back. In Johnson's and Pettite's cases -- as with all eligible free agents -- their former clubs have exclusive negotiating rights until next Friday, when the players hit the open market.

FULL LIST
The 186 players potentially eligible for free agency. Eligible players may file through Nov. 19 (c-club option for 2010; p-player option for 2010; m-mutual option for 2010, d-conditional option for 2010)
