Excuse my ignorance on this topic but don't these umbrella nets from memphis nets look like a scap.

Suds the HR guys lure the herring into a square net (scap net) with something called a stoolie. One angler tosses out a live herring or shiny facsimile and reels in towards the net. Herring trail the stoolie and when they get close to the net , the operator lifts it and 'voila'. Herring. Its also a one man operation but takes a bit of skill.

Yes, the umbrella nets look like what we call a scap net here. For a stoolie all you need is a 6-7 inch rubber shad (we use black and white color) with a jig head in it. To be honest we made our net out of two fiberglass rods for an electric fence, deer fence, and some rope for a crab trap. My friend and I like it better then the one we bought a few years ago. The deer fence has less drag in the water so it is easier for one person to use.

Actually, that is where I bought the scap net from. Always have. It's just that his supplier hand ties them and the knots he uses to secure them to the "frame" of the net always come untied. I usually wind up using small pieces of PowerPro to retie them.

you can order one from Cabelas. They are 3.5' x 3.5' for about 15 bucks. The state law regarding their use allows total area of net to be 36 square feet or 6' x 6' without a special permit. It takes some practice to get them when working alone, try placing the net in a fast run like by a dam, that seems to work best.
