Default Nice NC Red Drum 09 Season

Had a great time catching and releasing big red drum in Pamlico Sound this summer. Landed a good number from 39" to 48". Last trip was October 4th and landed one 44 1/2" beauty. Already looking forward to next year!

Nice fish! How are they compared to stripers in terms of finding them and in their fight. Can you fish for these from shore or just by boat?

Hey Doublerunner ... here in NC you can fish for big reds from boat, surf, and ocean pier along the outer banks depending on time of year. I caught all of these from my boat in Pamlico Sound using large piece of cut spot, croaker, mullet, etc fishing on anchor. My best day was 4 big reds boated but I hear of more experienced guys boating 8-12 fish or more. These fish usually enter the sound in August to spawn in the rivers, bays, etc and are usually gone by early October depending on how soon the cool weather comes. The law on drum is a slot limit ... keeping only fish that are between 18 -27" and limit of 1 fish per day. The surf and pier fishermen usually have their fun in late fall from October into December as the drum are leaving the sound. I like to go early in the day and catch bait as well as fish for spot, trout, flounder, and puppy drum to bring home to eat. Hope this helps.

Bob I have not fished where MrFlemz fished, well atleast that I know of. As fair as the weather down there in may I can say it s awesome, well atleast temp wise. Some days it can get quite hot. I have been in Charolette and Wilmington in May and Wilmington over the Thanksgiving holiday and the weather has always been great. Even on Thanksgiving we were in t shirts and a couple days in shorts. In May though you will love it. Far nicer than Michigan which I have been from the south end(Aunt lives in Ann Arbor) up to Makinaw. I have fished all over the state from streams all the way to the Great Lakes. Have also sailed around the straits and Makinac. Have fished out of Saginaw, Thunder Bay, Cheyboygan,Traverse, Onekama and a few other spots. You have some great fishing in Michigan.

For NC if you hit it in the winter there is some of the best Striper fishing you will find. I may in Wilmington around New Years to see some of my wife's family that has a Bed & Breakfast there. I will be sure to hit the surf for a few days and maybe a few on the boat also. By the time may rolls around though many of the Stripers have already started the trek north which begins end of march/beginning of april, although there are some that stay there year round. I hope that helps and good luck
