Manhattan is 6 miles by ferry. Traveling east brings you into the Verrazzano Narrows, Ambrose Channell and Raritan Bay. The deepest spot in all of the Hudson drainage is beneath the Verrazanno Narrows bridge. This whole region is prime Striper Country. There is some great striper action all along the north and south shores. Fort Wadsworth is a prime spot for plugging or working the surf. Whether it is fishing by boat or casting from shore, just about any where with access to the water is a possible location. There are natural deep pools and channells, harbor inlets, rips, rocks, wrecks, you name it its out there. Public Beach access on Staten Island is somewhat limited but striper fishermen have the beaches to themselves at night. The largest Beach is Great Kills beach and it is part of Gateway National Recreation area and a parking sticker is required. This is one of the only (if not the only) public boat ramp. A sticker can be purchased at the Miller Field Ranger station on New Dorp Lane near (New Dorp Beach, also part of Gateway). (718) 354 4500. More info here at the New York places to fish page. There are several other private boat ramps in the various marinas. Most other beaches, like South Beach, Midland Beach and Tottenville Beach are governed by the New York City Department of parks. There is plenty of free parking here. There is no saltwater licence needed but make sure your fish is a legal size and you take your garbage from the area. The borough has added 3 fishing piers but only one of these piers are suitable for striped bass fishing. The midland beach pier is productive for striped bass as it is located about only a few miles from the Verrazanno Narows Bridge and the mouth of the Hudson river. The pier at the ferry terminal may well harevest a striper but it looks as though it wouldnt be an easy task hoisting up a big fish at low tide. At the new pier at Sharrotts road, at low tide it is much too shallow, probably decent for fluke and skates because of the sandy bottom. I would like someone to post a report on the above mentioned piers. As I havent fished them. There are several other piers. Some old and delapidated although that doesn't stop the die hard from fishing them, and others more acceptable and safe. Another important location is Mt. Loretta in princess Bay. Get More info at the NY State Department of Environmental Conservation. To target stripers early in the spring, fresh clam bellies is the way to go. Salt them in a bucket of salt water to harden them so they stay on your hook. Later on in the spring the best way to taget stripers is to use bunker, heads, chunks or whole live lined bunker. Filleting chunks also works well, and they stay on your hook better for a distance cast. In the summer use sand worms and bunker, and in the fall eels work great. But so do all other baits including shrimp, lobster and squid. If you were to travel west along the north shore you would be adjacent to the kill van kull river. Bayonne, N.J. and Elizabeth N.J. are the cities on the other side of the river. Continuing west towards the northwestern end (mariners Harbor), you now turn southward and it becomes the Arthur Kill River. Traveling southward by boat, to the most southern point is Tottenville. Perth Amboy New Jersey is on the other side of the this the Raritan channel. Northward across the Raritan Bay is Sandy Hook New Jersey. This entire area is known to geologists and fishermen as the New York bight. A bight is a general term for a bend or curve in the shoreline of an open coast. In the New York region it refers to the great expanse of shallow ocean between Long Island (to the north and east) and the New Jersey Coast (to the south and west). Because Long Island trends generally east to west in relation to mainland of New Jersey it creates a great right angle in the general geometry of the Atlantic coastline. The Hudson River's outer harbor and the Raritan Bay constitute only a fraction of the greater New York Bight.

GATEWAY HAS NO ENTRANCE FEES. However, Beach Parking Fees are charged at Sandy Hook and Jacob Riis Park during the summer. Annual passes are available for Sandy Hook.

* If you plan to fish Great kills at night you must have a gateway fishing permit attached to your bumper sticker. The park police check vehicles and will ask you to leave the beach without it.
